Two Big Youth Events This Weekend!

On Saturday April 28, 2012 Street Hockey NYC coaches will be helping out at two big youth street hockey events hosted by the Dept. of Parks and Recreation. The annual Parks & Rec citywide tournament will take place from 11am-6pm on the pier of the USS Intrepid, as it did last year, with kids and teams from all over the city competing in the daylong event. The NY Rangers will be on hand with the hockey carnival-like roadshow, featuring fun games and skill training, as well as Rangers alumni for photos and autographs.

Last year’s tourney by the USS Intrepid.

On the same day, our coaches will introduce street hockey to participants of the annual Street Games program, held at Thomas Jefferson Park at 114th St. and First Ave. from 11am-3pm.

Girls and Women in Sports Day

On Saturday March 10, 2012 the Sunset Park Rec Center hosted an event for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Sunset Park hockey coach Andy helped set up the hockey table, with coaches Monica and Kami on hand to talk to participants about hockey, demonstrate some skills and let the girls give it a try!

A number of different sports were represented at the event, and a bunch of new girls signed up to play hockey at Sunset this season! The hockey table was well appointed with free promotional items for participants, courtesy of the NY Rangers!

Ranger Veteran Nick Fotiu Show’s Them How the Pros Play!

On Saturday Feb. 11, 2012, native New Yorker Nick Fotiu visited Sunset Park Rec Center to help run some drills with about 40 kids. Coaches Anthony, Mike and Vincent were there as well as Ahmed from Parks and Caitlin and Bob, volunteer coaches from Street Hockey NYC. After the drills, the kids played a 40- minute hockey game before sitting down with Rangers great Nicky, who answered questions ranging from “what inspired you to play hockey” to “did you ever get in any fights?” Nick Fotiu in a fight? Unthinkable! The day wound up with an autograph signing session and the distribution of NY Rangers gift bags for all the kids!

Coaches’ Meeting

Coaches at the Rangers offices

On Tuesday Jan. 17, 2012 our volunteer coach crew met with Rick Nadeau of the NY Rangers and Eric Wyche of the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation at the offices of the Rangers for a mid-season meeting about this year’s program.

Following the very productive meeting, the Rangers invited all the coaches to watch the Rangers shut out the Nashville Predators to a lively home crowd at MSG!

2012 Season Well Underway

The 2011-12 Youth Street Hockey program, presented by the NYC Parks Dept. and the NY Rangers, is well underway at rec centers all across the city, in all five boroughs!

This year Street Hockey NYC is providing volunteer hockey coaches at many of the locations, to help better train the participants in the fundamentals of the sport and help them become better hockey players.

On Tuesday Jan. 17, 2012 the NY Rangers will  host the volunteer coaches at MSG and treat them to free tickets as the Rangers take on the Nashville Predators! Before the game the coaches will meet with the program’s top coordinators, Rick Nadau of the Rangers and Eric Wyche of the Parks Dept.

Possible Youth Street Hockey Program with ALG

This week we met with the Ana Luisa Garcia Community Center (ALG) about running a youth street hockey program with them this summer. ALG runs year round youth programs, including sports, tutoring, mentoring, as well as coordinating volunteer projects in the Lower East Side community.

The program will likely run from July 5 to August 19 and include a wide range of age groups. Our volunteer coaches will provide basic hockey training and supervised game play. More information will be posted here once details are set.

We’re Now Partnered With the NY Rangers & Parks Dept!

street hockey Street Hockey NYC is partnering to provide volunteer coaches to New York Rangers Street Hockey. The youth street hockey program was launched in Dec. 2010 together with the NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation, having started at 10 different Parks rec centers around the city as a free instructional street hockey program for New York City kids. With the addition of Street Hockey NYC’s vast pool of experienced volunteer coaches, we hope to advance and enhance the program at it’s current locations, and grow it in new outdoor locations over the spring and summer, and into the future.
